Responsibilities: Administration of two degree programs, one training center and one research center with all attendant personnel, funding, and budgetary oversight responsibilities. Curriculum development, student advisement and career counseling and placement; faculty hiring and evaluation; program course scheduling.
Accomplishments: * New Research Center: Center for Emergency Management and Homeland Security Policy Research. Established jointly between The University of Akron and the State of Ohio Emergency Management Agency on a three year continuing Memorandum of Understanding in September 2002. The center is funded jointly between the two partners and the annual research agenda is determined cooperatively based on disasters and policy initiatives. The focus is on the practice of emergency management and how it can be improved rather than on the disaster. There is a strong policy focus so that the results of the research can be applied to improve practice. Current projects include the After action report on Ohio tornados, November 10, 2002; change in community flood risk in Shadyside, Ohio, ten years after the flood; and the impact of flood mitigation applied in Amesville, Ohio.
* New degree program: Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management Five new courses were developed as totally new curriculum. New degree program was instituted Summer I session, 1999. National Accreditation from International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) awarded for the B.S. Emergency Management and the A.A.S. Fire Protection Technology April 2000.
* New degree program under development Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services. Preliminary approval from the Ohio Board of Regents to plan for the new degree received in January 2001.
* Director, Training Center for Fire and Hazardous Materials: 1984 - Current. The Center offers certified fire service training programs, hazardous materials response programs and, provides OSHA and EPA certified training programs for business and industry. Currently offering Homeland Security Training for public and private safety and law enforcement entities. It also offers students the opportunity to gain required certification to enhance career employment opportunities while maintaining separation between academic education and technical training.
